00:01:14

Yeah, I mean, you know the the stress of eating is like.

00:01:17

Or choking.

00:01:18

It's not something you really think about as an adult anymore, you know, because you eating is just so natural, but.

00:01:24

Yeah, second nature.

00:01:26

But yeah, sometimes a a young child is really eager to just get food down its throat and you know, doesn't chew.

00:01:33

Yeah.

00:01:35

It doesn't match it.

00:01:36

You know you got limited teeth.

00:01:37

So like.

00:01:38

I still I still eat like that.

00:01:38

I blame him.

00:01:38

Blame him.

00:01:40

I eat like every meal is field rations like they're going to take it away from me.

00:01:42

Yeah.

00:01:44

Yeah, my grandpa always said I used to.

00:01:45

I didn't eat cheeseburgers.

00:01:46

I would inhale cheese, right, right?

00:01:47

It's.

00:01:50

Uh.

00:01:50

Yeah, so I I he probably takes takes after me in that sense.

00:01:54

So you just have to kind of throttle his intake and just make sure he doesn't eat it all at once.

00:01:59

One, yeah, like you know, you're definitely like here you go.

00:02:02

Here's a piece and you know you let him go for it.

00:02:03

Yeah.

00:02:05

And I mean, even today you know it's been a long time since he choked and today.

00:02:12

You know he tried just.

00:02:14

Downing some Apple and just kind of.

00:02:17

Shoving more and more food in his face and uh and it caught up to him and, uh.

00:02:22

See.

00:02:23

You had to do like Daddy Heimlich.

00:02:25

Not today, Luckily he was able to cough it out.

00:02:28

But yeah, the first time he did the first time he did choke.

00:02:28

Oh good.

00:02:31

He had gotten ahold of a a BlackBerry.

00:02:34

We were kind of like they're like cutting him off and getting him into like bite sized pieces and.

00:02:39

Yeah.

00:02:39

And then there was just a moment of chaos where he just started getting really grabby and he got a hold of a BlackBerry and got it down as like into his mouth and I tried to pick it out of his mouth.

00:02:48

Yeah and it was too far and and I was like oh OK, we'll carry on and.

00:02:54

And then, like moments later, you know a little bit later, Alex is like is he choking?

00:02:59

Yeah, 'cause he just kind of went quiet and he's like looking off, you know like 1000 yard stare kind of thing you know and uh.

00:03:06

Yeah, I, uh, you know, I had seen my mom.

00:03:11

Uh.

00:03:12

Respond to my niece choking one time and my niece was pretty.

00:03:14

OK.

00:03:15

She was old enough, but my mom had already like.

00:03:20

Fix the problem before I even recognize what was going on.

00:03:23

You know she just like reached under her, flipped her upside down and swatted her on the back.

00:03:27

Yeah.

00:03:27

00:03:27

Yeah, five blows on the back and on the third one it coughed out.

00:03:30

You know well, that's we saw that on the video like I was actually paying attention to the pre parenting video and they had that same maneuver.

00:03:38

Good good.

00:03:38

That is a really important one.

00:03:40

I did that with Micah right?

00:03:41

So the first time he choked on that black Berry.

00:03:45

An actual piece of food, not the bone, but.

00:03:47

Right, that would be really antiquated technology in your household.

00:03:50

All right?

00:03:51

But, uh.

00:03:51

00:03:51

But yeah, when he choked on that, I flipped him upside down, swatted him on the back like maybe like 6 times and it didn't work.

00:04:00

And Alex, you know Alex is like let me try and she does the same thing and.

00:04:00

Oh

00:04:05

Doesn't work and I'm like give me and I.

00:04:08

I took him back and I flipped him over and I started swatting him more.

00:04:13

Looked into his eyes and man, that was the moment of sheer terror for me because I mean.

00:04:17

Holy crap, I can only imagine.

00:04:19

It I mean it.

00:04:21

Yeah it was.

00:04:22

It was probably only going on.

00:04:23

Maybe like.

00:04:24

10 seconds by that point but it feels like an eternity and honestly, it felt like a we were already losing the battle like we were like Oh my God.

00:04:34

When I looked into his eyes and I saw the look on his face.

00:04:38

I just told Alex I might call 911 immediately like and she got on the phone and then I just kept going for it and eventually he was able to get a chunk out and then another chunk out and it was just this messy situation finally got all of it out damn but I mean.

00:04:40

Wow.

00:04:51

Yeah.

00:04:53

Yeah, in that moment man time stood still and I.

00:04:59

I recognized that.

00:05:03

This could be the moment that like.

00:05:06

We are helpless and we lose him now that yeah.

00:05:11

That's tough to tough to swallow, man.

00:05:13

That that shook me real hard.

00:05:15

I bet.

00:05:17

And.

00:05:19

You know it definitely traumatized all three of us.

00:05:22

Wow, so how long ago did this go down this whole endeavor?

00:05:25

Hey.

00:05:26

Buzz.

00:05:28

This was a in November.

00:05:31

OK.

00:05:31

00:05:31

OK wow man dude, I'm so glad that that had a happy ending.

00:05:34

But holy **** I can't even imagine the the panic as a as a new parent fuc.

00:05:37

Yeah Oh yeah.

00:05:38

Sheer terror it was.

00:05:40

It was the most dull Monday night, you know, just here we are eating food and.

00:05:46

And then next thing you know it's the most terrifying event of recent history you know, and, uh.

00:05:48

Yeah.

00:05:54

Yeah, Luckily you know there's a fire station like 2 streets away from us. They had an ambulance here like in one minute, but I mean you know the whole choking incident probably only went on for like 1520 seconds.

00:05:58

Yeah.

00:06:07

OK.

00:06:08

Maybe even longer, I don't know, but it felt.

00:06:08

Maybe?

00:06:08

00:06:11

Yeah.

00:06:12

It dragged on and it was just.

00:06:14

It was terrifying.

00:06:15

So just keep.

00:06:15

Just keep.

00:06:15

So even if they can get here in a minute, I couldn't imagine 'cause like his face was already turning.

00:06:20

Blue eyes were red.

00:06:20

Oh my gosh.

00:06:22

You know you could see like.

00:06:25

Ah, a sort of vacancy in his face and his eyes, you know, like.

00:06:29

Oh yeah.

00:06:31

Not knowing what to do, wow.

00:06:32

Yeah.

00:06:33

Props to the EMT 's for getting there so quickly.

00:06:34

Yeah.

00:06:36

Holy **** that's awesome man.

00:06:37

Oh yeah, yeah, yeah.

00:06:38

And I'm glad they had a happy ending.

00:06:41

When they hear choking baby, they don't hesitate they.

00:06:43

Yeah, so you have a you have a healthy boy.

00:06:44

May perspective the change?

00:06:46

Now all is well but I guess a a good dumb like warning for parents to just keep that small shift away from the, The Young child right things that are that they can fit inside their mouth.

00:06:55

You know?

00:06:56

You know the thing that confused me was.

00:06:57

So when we had called 911 they they were like it basically discouraged that they're like don't get close to the baby's back. I was just like, Oh my God, did we do something wrong when the EMT's got there I was like did I do something wrong? They feel like talking through this and the guy was just like you could tell that like.

00:07:04

Really.

00:07:10

We followed the video.

00:07:16

I'm not allowed to say that's the thing you're supposed to do, and you did it.

00:07:20

He just kept saying, well, did it work?

00:07:23

Like yeah, why was she telling me not to do it and stuff?

00:07:25

Wow.

00:07:28

So there's like some conspiracy as to whether that's an effective maneuver or not.

00:07:29

Picture.

00:07:32

No liability.

00:07:33

Yeah, the flat earthers are also against the the baby.

00:07:37

Heimlich maneuver well, let's talk about let's talk about your you mentioned and you said definitely try to get a baby moon in before the baby comes because you're going to wish you had if you if you don't do it, so can you elaborate on the baby moon?

00:07:38

Like

00:07:46

Or

00:07:51

I did a little research and it was?

00:07:53

You know a little bit fluffy and stuff, so I want to get your take on what a baby moon is.

00:07:58

I you know, I'm not sure what the official definition is of it, but we took the idea from I.

00:08:04

I believe Jake and Jenna had a baby moon and I'd never heard of one up until that point and then next thing you know we were planning ours and we.

00:08:06

OK.

00:08:13

We basically, you know, had this little getaway.

00:08:17

Uhm, you know we went to this little spot in Taos that it's like a hand.

00:08:21

Yeah.

00:08:22

This hand built house it's.

00:08:24

You know it's really amazing place and there's these Hot Springs.

00:08:27

You can hike down to that are like natural and whatnot and.

00:08:31

And yeah, so I mean the whole focus of the babymoon was this last hurrah is kind of real.

00:08:39

Intimate and like close thing for us. You know this quiet before the storm you know where we can just enjoy each other's company and and of course do baby related stuff right? Like naming like we we have we got a.

00:08:44

For.

00:08:53

You waited, you waited till then for the naming.

00:08:56

Yeah, no, we've been working on the naming for some time well.

00:08:59

Well, I so you.

00:09:00

You had to solidify it though that like did you wait until the very end?

00:09:02

Very hard.

00:09:03

We had combination.

00:09:05

OK.

00:09:05

We had all dude we had gone through like lists and lists of names, you know and.

00:09:13

It's a lot harder to name a baby.

00:09:15

It's a lot harder to name a baby than I ever imagined.

00:09:17

Understood it's gotta be a collab.

00:09:17

Yeah.

00:09:19

Oh, you know we gotta agree on the terms and stuff.

00:09:22

Yeah, you know you want it to be meaningful.

00:09:25

You want it to sound good.

00:09:26

You don't want it to be too easy to make fun of, uh, right?

00:09:30

Yeah.

00:09:30

Think about what this kid gonna endure, right?

00:09:34

What's this kind of rhyme within the name game?

00:09:34

Money.

00:09:36

That kind of ****

00:09:37

Oh yeah, Oh yeah, yeah.

00:09:38

I love it.

00:09:41

So all right back to the baby moon so baby moon is your last hurrah.

00:09:45

Last hurrah, the last good vacation that quiet before the storm.

00:09:49

You get the focus on each other and also kind of do some things you know you know, do whatever talking needs to be done.

00:09:58

You know, like if there are things that are on your mind, you know things to look forward to things you're nervous about, you know.

00:10:03

Kind of clear the air of a lot of things.

00:10:05

You know that are all you know, baby related, but also you know.

00:10:10

You're blessed, count the blessings things to look forward to become.

00:10:14

You know how close how close was it to?

00:10:14

What?

00:10:17

Delivery date when you guys did your babymoon.

00:10:19

While she was still comfortable to travel, right?

00:10:21

'cause as you get closer and closer to it, you know the baby grows, her organs are getting pushed around and so everything in her body gets reshuffled, like gets displaced by this baby.

00:10:31

That's growing, right?

00:10:32

So you know, being in the car for hours or something is tough.

00:10:37

You know, for.

00:10:37

Yeah, it's in New Mexico.

00:10:39

OK, right?

00:10:39

But they had her right, so you know.

00:10:43

When did we go?

00:10:46

Not sure, I'm not sure, but she was pretty pregnant now.

00:10:48

She's definitely pregnant.

00:10:50

Pictures with the Hot Springs and that was kind of this questionable thing of like 'cause you're not supposed to take.

00:10:55

Like really hot baths or something like that as it's heart rate.

00:10:57

Yeah, Gerald said the same thing.

00:11:00

You don't want to like cook the baby whatever and so we were kind of like yeah.

00:11:04

We went down to this hot spring and it was it was a comfortable temperature.

00:11:07

It wasn't too hot and it was.

00:11:10

Yeah, it's nice, it's nice.

00:11:11

Very cool yeah.

00:11:13

I'm a big fan of towels and.

00:11:15

And Santa Fe, and I mean those are the two places I've been to in New Mexico.

00:11:20

But huge fan man a lot, a lot of cool artwork and stuff out there.

00:11:23

Yeah.

00:11:24

Listening to your podcast about with the Lady from Santa Fe.

00:11:28

Yeah.

00:11:28

00:11:28

Yeah, really convinced me I want to go.

00:11:30

I want to go do some therapy.

00:11:33

Uhm, I think it'd be good.

00:11:34

Yeah.

00:11:35

It would be good, like as a debriefing.

00:11:37

You know being.

00:11:38

You know more than a year into, you know parenting and you know it's.

00:11:41

Sure.

00:11:44

Right?

00:11:45

I find that like the further I get into it, the less I really know, you know, the kinda start realizing and and so it would be good to do a a sort of treatment like that to.

00:11:50

And there's so much.

00:12:00

Really.

00:12:01

Yeah.

00:12:02

Digest it all.

00:12:03

Really look closely added about how you feel, how it's really affecting you.

00:12:08

I mean, 'cause there was one time where I did take like a small dose.

00:12:12

Uhm?

00:12:14

You know after becoming a parent and there were some anxieties that were like within me that I could feel where like attached to the role.

00:12:25

Of parenting in that bike.

00:12:29

In that you were always on and you're always you know, like with the you've got this.

00:12:31

Yeah.

00:12:36

Forever kind of responsibility.

00:12:39

For the first time, yeah, you know it's it's a constant bond of burden, not Burt not a negative burden but just a burden.

00:12:46

It's a major responsive.

00:12:47

Yeah, that's what it is.

00:12:48

What it is for sure, and I felt the weight of that, and I felt a little anxious about it too.

00:12:54

You know, like when I could feel deep down, you know, with like what's going on?

00:12:58

I like my core and.

00:13:00

And.

00:13:02

You know most of the time you know it's there or whatever, but like it's easy, there's so much noise and life.

00:13:09

You know that a lot of those things get drowned out, or you just you gotta March on right?

00:13:14

Yeah.

00:13:14

But sometimes you know when you're in that space.

00:13:18

You know when you have time and space to go within, you know like.

00:13:24

And you can confront some uncomfortable stuff, no doubt, and it's good.

00:13:27

And it's good.

00:13:28

It's a good thing, you know 'cause.

00:13:29

You also have to figure out where it's coming from and.

00:13:34

And you know it kind of helps you like re calibrate like you know your compass.

00:13:38

You know what's, what's your guiding.

00:13:41

You know, principles and so forth and so.

00:13:41

Sure.

00:13:43

Yeah, I can imagine I can imagine too, like all the anxiety of the unknowns of being a parent.

00:13:48

You know we we can reconcile things that are familiar to us and emotions and that kind of stuff.

00:13:49

Yeah.

00:13:53

But all the unknowns of, you know, just how am I going to be an effective parent and what's going to happen.

00:14:00

And this and that I'm responsible for their future.

00:14:02

I could see how, even as you look.

00:14:03

With that stuff objectively and in a mystical experience, how it it could still be overwhelming?

00:14:08

Oh yeah, I mean there's a feeling that like.

00:14:13

You know you're kind of.

00:14:17

Separated somehow like your mind is like in a different space, but like you've got this tapping foot.

00:14:23

That's like there's something waiting here.

00:14:26

Yeah.

00:14:26

Better get on with whatever it is.

00:14:28

Get here 'cause you got shipped to get back to you right?

00:14:30

Yeah.

00:14:31

And like you got to be able to just jump right into it and so you know, I think that once you get.

00:14:37

A good sleeping schedule going.

00:14:39

You know, like this is the time of day when I can really relax because, you know, once we're done with dinner.

00:14:47

He's he's pretty well, you know.

00:14:50

Uh.

00:14:50

00:14:51

Into his sleep routine and he goes asleep really easy and you know.

00:14:52

Good.

00:14:55

So we get to unwind at this time and it's a very consistent thing.

00:14:58

I think that's been the whole that's been a kind of a weird thing about Parenthood is the rigid schedule you know.

00:15:06

I've never been one to have a very rigid schedule.

00:15:09

Yeah.

00:15:09

I've always been able to.

00:15:10

2.

00:15:11

You know, make my own way and that's been, you know whether it's like self employed or working from home.

00:15:17

What have you?

00:15:17

You know, being able to do things on my schedule, travel all kinds of stuff that.

00:15:22

I haven't spent a night away from home.

00:15:25

I mean, I honestly don't get away from home for more than three hours.

00:15:29

Once a week.

00:15:30

You know, like.

00:15:31

I just want to be next to him all.

00:15:32

The time it's awesome.

00:15:33

Yeah, I mean, you know I work from home too.

00:15:35

So but like you know, between the caretaking and working and so forth, you know, and the schedule 'cause there's so much that goes into it with the sleeping, the eating happening, you know, like.

00:15:47

Oh, I can imagine.

00:15:49

Ah.

00:15:51

And, uh, yeah, it's uh, it's very rigid and it's it's kind of a trip where you.

00:15:53

Hey.

00:15:56

Paved the way for for fresh dads like me and the other folks that are a common man.

00:16:01

So yeah we we appreciate you leaving the bread crumbs.

00:16:03

Hey yeah.

00:16:06

And, uh, you're you guys are due July.

00:16:09

June 16th were 31 weeks, yeah?

00:16:14

Yeah soon.

00:16:14

Soon.

00:16:14

Yeah, yeah, we're we're jazz, man.

00:16:16

Yeah.

00:16:17

Got your your hospital bag all prepped and ready?

00:16:18

Yeah.

00:16:21

Got got an idea no.

00:16:22

We don't have that to go the the go bag just yet. We still have to get the nursery going. We have construction in the basement and they're just finishing up the construction and then we can move things into their proper locations. But right now the baby's room is just full of **** And so Jill.

00:16:37

Has a quote unquote theme that she wants to apply to the baby's room and so she has enough time to do it, but the the.

00:16:45

Basement Project has been kind of longer than we expected, so it's been frustrating.

00:16:50

Wait man like.

00:16:51

Yeah, got it.

00:16:52

Right, right behind me here.

00:16:54

Our neighbor.

00:16:54

When we had moved into the house she was like Oh yeah, you know, I'm I'm getting this remodel done where they're doing an addition and you know it should be done by the end of January and then it became February and March and then she doesn't even mention it and they're still like no word.

00:17:02

Yeah.

00:17:09

Oh man, that ***** Well my guys are good like.

00:17:11

Right?

00:17:12

You know things happen and some things popped up along the way.

00:17:15

A little scope creep and whatnot, but they've been hustling so I can't complain with them.

00:17:19

It's just, you know, things at the timing of this.

00:17:22

Trying to prep for the baby.

00:17:23

You know it kind of compounds the frustration at times, but yeah.

00:17:26

I'm sure I'm sure Jill filling it.

00:17:28

You know 'cause does the mother has that nesting instinct?

00:17:29

****

00:17:32

You know where they need to get things ready like there's.

00:17:36

There's a, there's a real.

00:17:38

Internal.

00:17:40

You know, but I mean, you know, literally figuratively, what have you, you know.

00:17:41

Oh yeah.

00:17:44

But it's coming and there's no stopping it.

00:17:46

And you gotta get it, right?

00:17:47

I am I am I am spending every waking moment that I could think of getting that getting ready for her to apply her theme to this this baby room.

00:17:56

So trust me, that's my number one priority.

00:17:58

Yeah, let her go nuts.

00:17:59

Let her go nuts, you know just.

00:18:01

Whatever she wants, let it you know, make it be.

00:18:04

You know, one thing that I would recommend is with your hospital bag.

00:18:05

Thank you.

00:18:11

The snacks so they bring food.

00:18:14

OK, like MRE's.

00:18:15

Yeah.

00:18:16

Maybe not Mr stuff, that's not.

00:18:18

Can we require?

00:18:18

We require.

00:18:19

I always think of memories we never have to bring something like it'll last for 100 more years. So just in case.

00:18:24

And it's like 2400 calories in one package, right? So that's.

00:18:27

I don't think about that stuff.

00:18:27

I only need one a day.

00:18:29

Hey man, when you're going on a 20 mile Rock You know you need those calories, but I wouldn't be doing that to the hospital.

00:18:32

Yeah.

00:18:34

Of course, yeah, but do you bring food for yourself?

00:18:37

Because when it's all going down, she won't be able to eat if she gets.

00:18:40

An epidural right?

00:18:41

Right?

00:18:41

00:18:41

That's when people feel anything.

00:18:42

Beautiful.

00:18:43

Boots for you so you don't leave the room and bring some like sodas or like I got like a four pack of Starbucks Doubleshot with little cans, yeah.

00:18:52

Just to stay up for the next 24 to 48 hours.

00:18:55

Yeah.

00:18:55

Yeah, you don't want to be passed out by the ladies going through hell.

00:18:58

She's going to resent you for that.

00:18:59

Right so bro I I could only envision yeah?

00:18:59

So bring.

00:18:59

Bring.

00:19:02

And fuel for yourself, you know, so that you can be there to you.

00:19:06

Know support her while she's doing the heavy lifting there so.

00:19:08

I like that, so don't don't expect to be able to order a pizza from the delivery room.

00:19:09

Food and caffeine for yourself.

00:19:13

Bring your own food and something to stay awake.

00:19:15

Yeah, probably.

00:19:15

Something without an odor would be good here.

00:19:17

OK.

00:19:19

To torture her with pizza while she's giving birth.

00:19:22

Right, right?

00:19:23

Alright cool.

00:19:23

Hey, did you get that link?

00:19:24

Like, uh?

00:19:25

Did you get that link I sent you about the Zendo project?

00:19:27

I did you actually, uh, I was preparing to listen to a podcast that was linked within that column.

00:19:35

Yeah.

00:19:37

You know this?

00:19:38

I forget who it is, but the whole focus on is like how to help someone who's having a bad trip.

00:19:44

Yeah.

00:19:44

I find that to be really interesting.

00:19:47

Because, uhm, I mean, I've experienced what I would consider a bad trip.

00:19:48

Yeah.

00:19:53

Maybe twice and I feel like a lot of it is.

00:19:58

Dose related you know little if it's coming on too heavily.

00:20:04

And you may, uh.

00:20:06

You know you're not submitting to it trying to fight it.

00:20:08

Sure.

00:20:09

You're trying to like wish yourself sober.

00:20:12

You're trying to like, you know?

00:20:15

Yeah, for sure intention too much and or it lasts forever.

00:20:16

Probably.

00:20:17

Yeah, right?

00:20:19

I mean there are a lot of things for me that'll contribute to a bad trip.

00:20:21

Sometimes I just want to go to bed and then the trip just ends.

00:20:24

I ends up, I end up resenting that trip.

00:20:27

Yeah, yeah, that's that's how one of my trips had ended.

00:20:30

It was like a Halloween and there was like a police helicopter flying.

00:20:33

That's no good no no.

00:20:33

I mean it did not make for restful sleep.

00:20:35

Not a good setting, no no.

00:20:38

Oh

00:20:39

So I'm I'm fascinated with the idea of, like you know, finding someone else who's been a guide who can help give some insight on how to help people cope when they are, you know, in distress.

00:20:54

I think that's a really important thing to know how to do, especially if you're bringing people in.

00:21:00

On an experience you know.

00:21:02

And also they said they said to not just for people that are having bad trips, but you know, just kind of reconciling what happened to you.

00:21:10

Know, making sense of it, not necessarily an integration, but somebody to kind of translate it for you into usable therapeutic feedback.

00:21:19

I think that too without having like somebody.

00:21:21

It's well trained on site that can kind of, you know, set your mind at ease as well.

00:21:26

Make it useful.

00:21:26

Of course.

00:21:28

Yeah, and uh, I think it's a good thing you know for someone to be able to gently float out box.

00:21:34

That are, you know, kind of more thought provoking, but someone who can gently like float some ideas out for a person to chew on for a little bit.

00:21:43

And you know, kind of dig a little deeper within themselves.

00:21:47

I think that's I've had a friend who's been able to, you know, plant little seeds in my mind as I was.

00:21:54

You know?

00:21:55

Out there and.

00:21:57

To get you going in certain directions.

00:21:59

Yeah, yeah it was a.

00:22:01

You know, some nebulous enough kind of questions.

00:22:04

You know where there's so much space and interpretation that like.

00:22:08

You know your mind gets to kind of like wrangle with it from different angles and.

00:22:13

Uhm, some look like a mental exercise and.

00:22:16

Interesting.

00:22:17

And yeah, yeah, it's a.

00:22:21

Yeah, I'm I'm really.

00:22:22

I'd be really interested in doing something like what you had done with the, you know, somebody who does it professionally.

00:22:28

Definitely.

00:22:29

You know consistently.

00:22:32

Would really like to try the MDMA.

00:22:34

This is therapy.

00:22:35

I've never really had an MDMA experience.

00:22:39

You know, I've taken some but.

00:22:42

Never really got much.

00:22:44

Out of it, yeah we can.

00:22:45

We can definitely talk offline and I can point you in the right direction there I.

00:22:48

I personally I had not to go into any detail, but I've noticed positive changes in like just the way I approach intimacy and like my interaction with my wife and just a lot of anxiety and reservations.

00:23:03

That dissipated, so you know, that was my intention going in.

00:23:06

That's what we talked about.

00:23:07

That's how we integrated and I thought it was really beneficial so.

00:23:11

You considering any follow up session top?

00:23:14

I mean I'm curious like is there?

00:23:17

Are there?

00:23:19

Meetings that happen like online meetings, phone meetings, whatever before.

00:23:22

Yes.

00:23:23

Is there like a series leading up to it, and then the event.

00:23:26

Yeah there were. I would say a handful of phone conversations leading up to it and then one video zoom call just to kind of see one another's faces and that was to just make sure you know. Also the in this case Molly.

00:23:40

She just wants to make sure that it's something that is mutually beneficial, like she's going to be able to help me and I have the capacity to be helped by the medicine and associated therapy.

00:23:52

So it was a qualifying session or a series of qualifying sessions for her.

00:23:57

But also, she wanted to make sure that she knew which direction.

00:24:01

To steer me, whether it was mfor intimacy or things that were a little bit more on the lighter side?

00:24:06

Or would it be trauma based PTSD?

00:24:09

You know, things that were more.

00:24:11

Uh, that psilocybin would be more beneficial for.

00:24:14

She had to figure out which path to take.

00:24:16

So through the course of those conversations, I think she was able to get an idea of where she wanted it to go.

00:24:21

And we just kind of went from there.

00:24:23

But it was awesome.

00:24:24

Cool cool.

00:24:25

Yeah I wanted to point out the Zen Zendo project, and looking at the the details they actually have like a series of things that they talk about.

00:24:36

Principles like 4 zendo.

00:24:38

Project principles.

00:24:38

Let me see if I can share this.

00:24:40

Same with UDP shared to all participants.

00:24:46

Nope, that's not what I wanted to do.

00:24:48

Alright, and

00:24:51

Yes, you can see here they have 4 project principles of psychedelic peer support and it kind of makes sense, you know.

00:24:58

But not everybody is Privy to how this stuff goes smoothly.

00:25:02

So they talk about a safe space, which I think plays into the setting mostly right.

00:25:07

Oh yeah.

00:25:08

Definitely.

00:25:10

Talk through, not down.

00:25:12

So they say without distracting from the experience, help the person connect about their feeling.

00:25:16

So kind of yeah, help them deal with things as they come up and not dismiss them and.

00:25:24

Work through it.

00:25:24

Yeah.

00:25:24

00:25:24

Yeah, I'm working through it.

00:25:25

Instead of trying to run away from it, get away from it.

00:25:29

I feel like that.

00:25:30

That urge to.

00:25:33

To run away from something, it's kind of what Sparks the anxiety that leads down the bad trip route, you know, sure.

00:25:39

If you have nobody to help you feel safe, you know, reestablish your mindset.

00:25:42

Yeah.

00:25:45

Sitting not guiding. I thought this one was like the best for me, at least coming off of my assisted MDMA therapy. Be a calm, meditative presence of acceptance, compassion and caring. Promote feelings of trust and security. Let the person's unfolding experience be the guide. So basically, don't try to.

00:26:04

Pigeonhole them into a certain area or get ahead of the process.

00:26:08

I thought that was a really cool principle.

00:26:11

Yeah yeah, I feel like you know it's.

00:26:14

Yeah.

00:26:15

There's this tendency when you've gotten something.

00:26:18

Profound from an experience.

00:26:21

You know you want to, kind of.

00:26:23

You want other people to recognize that or see that, and you hope you know you want everyone to have that same kind of insight, but.

00:26:26

Sure.

00:26:31

You know that that doesn't.

00:26:33

That doesn't come from wanting it it.

00:26:35

You know it's one of those things where the experience has to lead to it.

00:26:39

Yeah, so listen.

00:26:40

You know?

00:26:41

You know it's you have to read the room, you know, read the room, listen but it's the worst thing in the world is to have somebody kind of preaching to you and trying to kind of tell you what you should be doing when you're struggling.

00:26:53

So I really thought that was a cool tenant of this.

00:26:55

So this project.

00:26:56

Sure, which kind of makes me.

00:26:58

You know interested in like the choice of whatever ambient music?

00:27:05

What happy was going on 'cause I know that you know, with some programs you know they have a playlist and.

00:27:11

Sure.

00:27:13

I can imagine that is a tough thing to put together that may not always work.

00:27:19

You know, like may not always be.

00:27:22

What the person?

00:27:24

Wants or needs at that moment, but for sure.

00:27:26

Well, we Molly set together.

00:27:29

She set aside a really.

00:27:33

Really well tailored playlist to the MDMA experience.

00:27:36

So there are different playlists she used for the psilocybin experiences for the MDMA experiences, they vary, you know, based on dosages and stuff.

00:27:45

Did you?

00:27:46

Did you hear about the Johns Hopkins psychedelic playlist?

00:27:50

You sent that.

00:27:50

I did send OK, so yeah, that's you know that's one where they they really get into classical or like Western classical music.

00:27:52

Very flattering.

00:27:57

So I mean there are different schools of thought.

00:27:59

I personally just love and we talked about this.

00:28:01

Any variety of instruments.

00:28:03

Pure vocals, you know.

00:28:05

Things that are not diluted by technology that are just raw and organic like that to me.

00:28:10

That is where I really settle in and get to an awesome, comfortable setting.

00:28:16

Yeah, my favorite thing is the didgeridoo.

00:28:19

Ah.

00:28:19

You play the didgeridoo, right?

00:28:20

I play the didg, yeah so.

00:28:22

So it it becomes, you know this thing where I don't have to think about it.

00:28:22

******* baller.

00:28:26

It becomes an extension of me and I can kind of.

00:28:28

Like maneuver it.

00:28:30

You know the sound, however I feel like it and it's a it's it's a pretty.

00:28:36

It's a fun instrument.

00:28:37

It definitely is a hard thing to appreciate sober, but you know when you're in the right space, it kind of.

00:28:38

Oh

00:28:38

Yeah.

00:28:44

Takes you on a journey, it's I.

00:28:45

Just love how it's not just audio, it's you know there's the vibrations and the the physical aspect to it too.

00:28:52

I mean, those things are just.

00:28:53

List.

00:28:55

Just overwhelmingly awesome in the right scenario for sure.

00:28:58

Oh yeah, Oh yeah, one other thing that is difficult is not bad, so challenging experiences can wind up being our most valuable and lead to learning and growth.

00:28:59

Oh yeah.

00:28:59

00:29:10

So yeah, just not running away with not running away from it.

00:29:13

You know facing things, head on looking at.

00:29:15

Things objectively, I think that's that's definitely a worthwhile.

00:29:19

Oh yeah, I can dig that.

00:29:20

Yeah, and then in the middle here they have trust let go be open, breathe, surrender.

00:29:26

I think surrender probably the most important part.

00:29:28

There.

00:29:29

Like that person in like a little tent, right?

00:29:32

Very comfortable.

00:29:33

A comfort blanket on what's on their side in case they puke.

00:29:35

They.

00:29:37

You know they're not going to choke.

00:29:38

Choke on it.

00:29:38

On it.

00:29:38

00:29:38

On it, oh, good point, I thought they were just really grossly obese.

00:29:42

I thought this was the blanket was being strained.

00:29:44

Properly shaped there all right.

00:29:46

Yeah.

00:29:46

All right, yeah?

00:29:46

Yeah.

00:29:48

My brother, will I enjoy your evening and your your wind down and let's talk again soon for sure.

00:29:54

Definitely alright man.

00:29:54

Definitely.

00:29:54

00:29:57

And now a mushroom cultivation update with the Prodigy Andrew.

00:30:02

I was voted Mr Fungus.

00:30:02

2nd.

00:30:02

00:30:04

This guy knows fungus.

00:30:07

Oh

00:30:07

Sorry Felix, for some reason couldn't be here.

00:30:10

I was hoping he would but love to speak on his behalf, but Andrew, let's let's talk about cultivation, your cultivation felixes cultivation.

00:30:19

You guys have been killing it and I want to hear about it.

00:30:22

Yeah, it's been a ton of fun, especially sharing it with Felix.

00:30:25

Oh yeah, so let's talk about Felix.

00:30:27

First I saw some pictures on Instagram that showed what I thought to be like a typical growth based on like what I thought he was working with.

00:30:36

But do you know like the parameters of like his setup and how he was able to get that kind of yield?

00:30:41

It was awesome.

00:30:42

Yeah yeah, so I that was our last supervised batch together.

00:30:47

OK, so yeah, I was there to help construct those things.

00:30:51

So it's this shoebox Tek, so it's like I think 5 quarts.

00:30:56

Those are 9 quarts, something pretty small, and I had two.

00:30:57

OK.

00:31:01

Basically, they were old spaghetti sauce, jars that I had turned into holding my grain spawn.

00:31:08

OK.

00:31:09

Those had been sitting in my closet for like 3 months.

00:31:12

They were super colonized, I had nothing else to do with them, so there's like be like like here B + 2.

00:31:17

How generous of you.

00:31:17

Uhm?

00:31:19

Yeah, and you know I.

00:31:20

I thought about tossing your way, but I figured a desperate new grower like feel like those that jump on the opportunity.

00:31:23

Now.

00:31:25

Any opportunity you made the right call.

00:31:27

So a few lessons that we learned though.

00:31:30

One thing you pointed out when we were at his place for the Bachelor party was the mushrooms kind of grow to this size container they have and so you can really maximize those shoeboxes.

00:31:37

Yeah.

00:31:37

Yeah.

00:31:40

We did that B.

00:31:41

Plus it was probably a one to one sub ratio, but a nice three to four inch depth.

00:31:44

OK.

00:31:47

On it, like almost to the top, and that really helped, I think like keep.

00:31:52

At.

00:31:53

The mushroom size larger than what he had on the first few shots.

00:31:57

It had more more of a stack to go through, essentially to get to the white.

00:32:01

Exactly.

00:32:02

OK, nice.

00:32:02

And it was a really high spawn ratio, so again, I think like that's the the trick to getting some of those thick canopy's.

00:32:10

Yeah, I mean it looked like he'd let the veils go a little long.

00:32:13

They were kind of broken up, but man, the volume, that's it.

00:32:17

Really impressive.

00:32:18

I don't want him to get a big head like it doesn't always go that way, you know, but good for him, for, you know, killing it right off the bat there.

00:32:25

And I don't want to spoil it, but he does.

00:32:27

I know he's got another two tubs on the way.

00:32:31

Or two shoeboxes?

00:32:32

That you know might not be as fortunate, but we'll see, time will tell.

00:32:36

That's great, so that was impressive.

00:32:39

And when Felix is on it on again, next, we'll have to have him brag a little bit.

00:32:42

I know it was kind of under your your coaching or you took him under your wing a little bit so you can Pat yourself on the back as well for that harvest that plentiful harvest.

00:32:52

I appreciate that, thank you.

00:32:54

Let's let's talk about the pictures you posted about the ***** envy.

00:32:58

So you know I've struggled with ***** envy and albino ***** envy.

00:33:01

I've gotten some yields, but definitely not commensurate with what I'm getting with the other strains.

00:33:06

But you look like you've had some success there as well, and I'd like to hear kind of what you've been working with.

00:33:11

Yeah, so my success is like 5050. Right now. I did a ***** envy tub and a albino ***** envy tub. Pretty similar sized containers but not the exact same. Again pretty similar ratios.

00:33:23

OK.

00:33:26

Yeah.

00:33:27

I actually used a higher spawn ratio in my ***** envy and that is like.

00:33:32

The whitest

00:33:34

Brick of mycelium that I've seen, but it's not pinning.

00:33:38

It's not nothing happening, it's been that way for a while.

00:33:40

It takes forever.

00:33:41

That's little like.

00:33:41

For some reason, it's it's such a latent delay.

00:33:44

It's like a fricking snail.

00:33:46

And I honestly like does it pin like a normal strain would because the one if that's the case, I have a bunch of just.

00:33:54

Yeah.

00:33:55

Like small blobs right now and I'm having those.

00:33:57

Like little green little green blobs.

00:34:00

Kind of yeah.

00:34:00

Kind of.

00:34:00

Yeah, well, what happens with those is you'll notice they'll just die at a certain point, so those little green blobs you can probably take those and dry them, and by sheer volume you'll get enough to work with.

00:34:11

But yeah, you're going to get a lot of those.

00:34:13

Those are kind of like dead pins, but in a weird form factor.

00:34:18

Yeah, OK. And then on the other side my my albino ***** envy. I'll call it a Pi mean that stuff it it was. I think it came out to just shy of 20 grams dry and a lot of really small pellet size.

00:34:33

Actually, I take that like those are the ones I'm talking about, the albinas or the little green.

00:34:37

Stubbs the the regular ***** envy.

00:34:38

OK.

00:34:40

Did yours get like a Brown like mulch?

00:34:42

Did a little bit of like brownish mulch rise to the surface and like sit on top of your mycelium.

00:34:49

Uh.

00:34:49

From that, So what you were saying was blue or green before?

00:34:54

Yeah, mine is like Brown.

00:34:56

OK, so with that.

00:34:56

Or I don't know.

00:34:56

Know

00:34:56

00:34:57

With the Albino I got those little green like.

00:35:01

Pins that were kind of circular and they just never amounted to much, but on the normal peanuts side or I keep on the normal greatest ever side.

00:35:04

Huh?

00:35:11

Got my.

00:35:11

My head is like what are you doing to me?

00:35:14

Never had these many penises in my head at one time anyways, so on the normal ***** envy side, what happened was after I got my mycelium like a little bit of this.

00:35:25

Brown what looked to be like mulchy muddy kind of stuff.

00:35:30

Kind of settled on the surface of the mycelium.

00:35:33

I don't know where it came from.

00:35:34

It kind of came somewhere from the brick.

00:35:37

It served no purpose whatsoever, but it just sat there forever until it finally produced some mushrooms.

00:35:43

It's this weird caveat with that strain, for me at least.

00:35:46

That's what happened every single time.

00:35:48

Time.

00:35:49

OK, well I'm holding my breath.

00:35:51

I mean it's.

00:35:51

He

00:35:52

Now to the point where the albino ***** envy is already done, already soaked the cake and the other is still looking like it is going to pin any day or like kind of pop any day.

00:35:58

Yeah.

00:36:03

Looks totally healthy than mycelium, but it's not.

00:36:07

Doing anything yet so fingers crossed.

00:36:08

Don't don't give up on it.

00:36:09

Yeah, still have hope I.

00:36:10

Yeah.

00:36:11

I did the same thing and I just let it sit.

00:36:13

I'm like I'm not taking all that effort and just disposing of it Willy nilly and eventually my my patience paid off.

00:36:20

Yeah.

00:36:20

Yeah.

00:36:20

00:36:21

So where did you get the spores?

00:36:22

Again, for your ***** envy stuff just to remind the the listeners if they want to do it as well.

00:36:27

I got those at quality spores and uhm, yeah, honestly I've I've just ordered another few strains from them.

00:36:35

Cool.

00:36:35

Haven't shopped anywhere else I think just between low contamination rates and some some pretty good genetics.

00:36:43

I have no complaints.

00:36:44

Hey man I will.

00:36:45

I'll see if they want to be a sponsor on the podcast.

00:36:48

A pro bono or sponsor just to kind of, you know, help cross cross market a little bit.

00:36:53

Yeah, and they've got this new strain.

00:36:55

Me and Felix are really excited to try.

00:36:56

It's called hero.

00:36:58

Hmm.

00:36:59

It's a cross between.

00:37:02

Amazonienne and.

00:37:06

Uhm, eight I believe.

00:37:08

Beautiful.

00:37:09

Gotta gotta pack a punch.

00:37:10

Here that regular ***** envy.

00:37:12

Yeah exactly.

00:37:12

It'll have pack punch.

00:37:14

Very cool, so quality spores anything unique that you did with your cultivation of those strains that you didn't do with the others.

00:37:22

Yes, actually, uh, so I've been pretty loyal to the popcorn tech, but what I've started with those it was a little bit of honey and I don't have a great ratio for that.

00:37:26

OK.

00:37:35

I think I did 9 quart jars at a time and I'll do like a tablespoon of honey for all that popcorn.

00:37:43

OK.

00:37:43

You know?

00:37:44

Just whatever kind of low ratio, I just dump a little bit and don't measure it.

00:37:48

And then a little bit of the spent coffee grounds.

00:37:51

OK.

00:37:52

And then I've always done the gypsum in that as well so that you know I let it soak for 24 hours. Pressure cooker for 25 minutes once it dries out, put it in jars, and then sterilize it. And I will say that that mycelium along with I did white teacher with that same tactic. It was the thickest jar of white.

00:38:02

OK.

00:38:12

Mycelium I've ever seen.

00:38:14

Beautiful.

00:38:15

Yeah, it was truly like a cake, but just kernels of popcorn.

00:38:18

It was pretty cool.

00:38:18

It's amazing how when you get into mushrooms in my.

00:38:21

Analogy, it's when you see fluffy what fluffy white mycelium like the dopamines just start flowing.

00:38:27

It's it's just it's pouring for mushroom enthusiasts, it's great.

00:38:31

Yeah, and I never thought I'd be one to, you know, forget about jars, but it's so nice to set him away.

00:38:36

See him in two weeks and be like Oh my gosh and just see that.

00:38:39

White, my son.

00:38:40

I mean nice little surprise.

00:38:41

Yeah, the the hard work is over.

00:38:44

Exactly.

00:38:45

Awesome man, so like you said Lucy was.

00:38:47

A strain you're playing with.

00:38:49

Lucy was another one I'm probably not going to mess with that again.

00:38:53

It was really thin stems and you know.

00:38:53

Too hard.

00:38:55

Kind of like the watery like.

00:38:57

OK.

00:38:58

Super looks great for a photo and super thick, but once it dried out it was pretty flaky.

00:39:03

OK.

00:39:03

And if you know the consistency I'm talking about.

00:39:05

Yeah, Puerto Rican gave me the same kind of vibe like just not thick harvests and I'll stick with B plus and Golden teacher any day over that stuff.

00:39:11

Yeah, exactly.

00:39:13

I do want to bring up real quick.

00:39:14

I sent you the the link for the Telluride Mushroom Festival coming up coming up in August.

00:39:19

It would be a total nerd fest for things like these conversations.

00:39:21

Oh man.

00:39:23

Yeah, so we were thinking that'll be.

00:39:25

We talked to the OB GYN and after two months the baby is not as susceptible to viruses and contaminants in the outside world.

00:39:33

So you can actually take.

00:39:34

New stuff, so we figured that would be a great opportunity to take the baby to Telluride for its first out of the House adventure.

00:39:41

I could do the mushroom festival Joe could just hang out with the baby and experience the town.

00:39:45

But yeah, man, if you if you can swing it I I would love to, uh, I'd love to check that out with you.

00:39:51

It would be an honor and you're the one who introduced me to the sport and.

00:39:54

But all right, well, tentative. Tentatively put it on the calendar brother. It sounds like a blast. Anybody that's interested? It's tellurideinstitute.org.

00:39:55

So I loved you.

00:40:03

Slash Telluride mushroom festival.

00:40:05

Just do a search on Telluride Mushroom Festival and will pop up alright.

00:40:09

Andrew, well, uh, until we meet again.

00:40:11

Thanks so much for doing this.

00:40:13

I wanted to keep it short and sweet but again very proud of you and what you're doing and keep it.

00:40:17

Going brother, Yep.

00:40:17

Going brother.

00:40:18

Yep, can't wait to talk again.

00:40:19

Alright man, see you.

00:40:20

Thanks, Dave.

00:40:21

And now it's time for some education as my lovely wife Jill joins us to talk about mushrooms and health.

00:40:24

2nd.

00:40:24

00:40:28

You want my wisdom.

00:40:30

Very wise woman.

00:40:31

2nd.

00:40:33

Joel, thank you for being here.

00:40:35

As always a pleasure.

00:40:37

Well what what?

00:40:39

Mushrooms or mushrooms in this case do we have today?

00:40:43

So we're going to talk about.

00:40:47

Earn rich mushrooms because I just studied that micronutrient iron.

00:40:53

Oh

00:40:53

So with iron and I thought I would compliment this.

00:40:57

Podcast Well is those at high risk of iron.

00:41:01

Iron deficiency are pregnant women.

00:41:04

All right?

00:41:05

And menstruating women.

00:41:06

Yeah.

00:41:07

Of course.

00:41:08

Almond, and also infants and children.

00:41:11

And so I thought that was interesting to know.

00:41:13

Now iron is iron is there's a blood correlation with iron, right?

00:41:18

Like I know it's important for the blood.

00:41:19

Correct?

00:41:21

Yeah, so it's part of your hemoglobin and myoglobin which is part of your blood.

00:41:26

OK.

00:41:26

And it's there's there's Brody.

00:41:30

Brody likes lion.

00:41:32

Maybe Birdie shouldn't have a squeak toy during your health segment.

00:41:34

Maybe he shouldn't.

00:41:39

He likes to be involved.

00:41:40

OK, but now I'm if I take it away.

00:41:44

Well, we'll see.

00:41:45

You take it away.

00:41:46

I think birdies he's hovering right now he's not squeezing, so let's.

00:41:49

Yeah, we'll just let him like lick it.

00:41:51

OK yeah, just grab the ear buddy.

00:41:52

Don't grab the squeeze part.

00:41:53

Yeah, so there are two sources of iron.

00:41:57

There's heme iron, which is animal based.

00:41:59

OK.

00:42:01

And non heme iron which you get from vegetables.

00:42:06

So the differences are is that your body uses heme iron much more effectively.

00:42:12

How do you spell that?

00:42:13

Hmm, me.

00:42:14

OK, so it's hemo like the prefix for hemoglobin.

00:42:18

Essentially yeah, OK.

00:42:20

So mushrooms are often a really good source of iron and I want to say that some mushrooms.

00:42:26

Boom

00:42:31

I have heme which is traditionally found in meat, poultry and seafood, and so that is something that I'll definitely do some more research on, but in highlighting some of the the mushrooms that are high in iron, you know they're going to be oyster.

00:42:36

OK.

00:42:38

Yeah.

00:42:48

Mushrooms usually have twice as much iron as.

00:42:52

You know white mushrooms that you would white button mushrooms that you would find in the grocery store?

00:42:55

So that's the most iron rich of the mushrooms.

00:42:58

Yeah, so oysters seem to have the highest.

00:42:59

Yeah.

00:43:03

Whereas Portobello and shataiki mushrooms contain very little.

00:43:07

So if you're looking to boost your iron intake, oyster mushrooms are great and then also the one we're going to highlight a little further, or chanterelles, so those are another mushrooms that are.

00:43:17

Umm?

00:43:19

It's also popular name I've heard of a lot of chanterelles and I had.

00:43:22

You have are these strippers.

00:43:25

It may not be.

00:43:26

Their their given name but yes.

00:43:28

Hey chanterelles, yeah.

00:43:28

He shot around.

00:43:30

So they have, uh, an assortment of health boosting nutrients, fatty acids, beta glucans that act as gut prebiotics.

00:43:43

They contain about 15 different amino acids.

00:43:46

We have 20 that are.

00:43:48

Essential to live so they almost complete the entire amino acid.

00:43:53

Portfolio.

00:43:54

I wanted to ask you though.

00:43:55

You mentioned when I first inquired about iron and mushrooms and how that relates to like the iron that you get in steak it which of the types of irons is it?

00:44:03

Mill

00:44:06

The steak, iron or the other iron that comes with mushrooms?

00:44:10

So yes.

00:44:12

I know I flagged that, but yes, you know what I'm talking about.

00:44:14

I know it's exactly it so.

00:44:17

Did I get ahead of us?

00:44:19

Well, it did kind of touch on that earlier that I wasn't aware and then you just brought it back.

00:44:26

It's rich in what?

00:44:27

No.

00:44:28

Type of iron.

00:44:30

I would definitely say off the top of my head.

00:44:33

Absolutely they have the non heme iron, but I want to say that I've also read that they might have the heme iron they might play in both categories, maybe not as much heme, it's it would be less heme than.

00:44:35

Then nonheme OK.

00:44:45

Interesting.

00:44:49

Uhm, you know the majority would be non heme, which be the plant based iron which the body typically doesn't absorb or utilize as effectively as heme iron. So if someone's anemic, you know they're they need to.

00:44:54

OK.

00:45:06

You know, kind of boost up their their blood supply and heme iron is the best way to do that.

00:45:12

OK, thank you thanks, thank you.

00:45:12

Yeah, yeah, you're welcome.

00:45:16

I wish I had a solid answer on that.

00:45:18

We'll come back.

00:45:18

We'll we'll follow up with the listening audience and let him know.

00:45:20

We keep saying that and it never happens, oh.

00:45:23

That's true, so we need to.

00:45:24

We don't have like a showrunner to take notes for us, so maybe that's my excuse for this week.

00:45:29

OK, yeah, that's that's one that's on the list.

00:45:30

It's uh.

00:45:31

An intern for that.

00:45:32

Yeah, if Brody if we can bring him up to speed.

00:45:35

Umm yeah, I don't know.

00:45:35

Yeah.

00:45:35

00:45:36

He's got a.

00:45:37

He's a stenographer at heart, but.

00:45:39

Yeah.

00:45:40

So back to chanterelles.

00:45:43

And so.

00:45:44

In addition to being rich in iron, they have a lot of B vitamins, vitamin A, vitamin C, beta carotene, vitamin D, which is sometimes hard to get from food.

00:45:57

Vitamin D is so chanterelles.

00:46:01

They're hard to find in the market.

00:46:02

They're usually found in farmers markets because this is a mushroom that is very difficult to grow at.

00:46:10

Tom, it's it usually forage for them.

00:46:14

OK.

00:46:14

So Colorado is a state where you can forage for chanterelles, and we've actually purchased them locally at a farmers market.

00:46:20

Yeah, fresh from the farm.

00:46:23

Funky Gary.

00:46:23

Fresh from the farm, they were delicious.

00:46:26

They were expensive.

00:46:27

There are definitely more expensive than the other ones, and generally any mushrooms that are foraged will be more expensive because there's a lot more effort involved in that.

00:46:36

Now, is it one of those mushrooms that's grown on wood?

00:46:39

Do you know, like the substrate that they use?

00:46:41

Yes, so they are grown like on fallen logs and.

00:46:43

Yeah.

00:46:46

And you know, I think that they're the ones that were at the market that we purchased.

00:46:52

We're like on like a Riverside bed, but yeah, they they grow on like trees and branches and logs and and those those sort of things.

00:47:00

OK.

00:47:02

And I do remember those were delicious.

00:47:04

So yeah, here goes.

00:47:04

Yeah, we made like a what like a mushroom toast like I think I sauteed them with a little bit of Sherry vinegar and put them on toast and it was really good with some.

00:47:09

Hmm.

00:47:15

Verbs.

00:47:16

Love me some mushrooms.

00:47:17

Yeah, so I wanted to point out so foraging we have not yet foraged.

00:47:21

It's on our list and I got you like a foraging kit and like we got some books to help us identify.

00:47:27

I have the knife with the brush.

00:47:28

I'm ready to go.

00:47:29

Yeah, we're ready to go, so hopefully this summer we get out and do some foraging, but there is a mushroom that looks just like the chanterelle that is toxic and we have to be careful that we don't run into this so the Latin term.

00:47:33

Heck yeah.

00:47:48

Is unfair Lotus Illudens, but it's often called the jack-o'-lantern mushroom, so chanterelles they're like they have an orangey color and they they grow in clusters.

00:47:54

Ooh.

00:47:58

OK.

00:48:01

They have the gills underneath the jack-o'-lantern, mushrooms, mushrooms.

00:48:06

The gills also run down the stem.

00:48:08

And so that's a significant problem.

00:48:12

A way of, you know, seeing which one is which?

00:48:15

And and then also I had read that they light up at night, so it's kind of plays into like a jack-o'-lantern that would be in Halloween.

00:48:27

Interesting.

00:48:27

So they have those properties as well.

00:48:28

And I would.

00:48:29

I would think that that would be not, uh, repellent, but maybe like a honeypot for you know, predators and kind of entice them in with their their beauty and then poison the **** out of him.

00:48:41

That's interesting because.

00:48:42

Yeah, Hola ropeadope.

00:48:44

Group dope yeah yeah.

00:48:46

So they have this like luminescence that they can emit in the dark and so yeah.

00:48:52

Very nice, yeah I would.

00:48:54

I would definitely want to to know how to distinguish like which mushrooms are pickable and edible versus those that are poisonous.

00:49:01

Yeah.

00:49:02

I mean foraging.

00:49:03

It sounds fun, but.

00:49:05

At the same time, I mean, you really have to be careful 'cause you can.

00:49:08

You can screw the pooch on that one.

00:49:10

Yeah, and what I I gifted you a membership to the local Colorado like mushrooms.

00:49:16

Club and you can submit photos to the people like you know some of the administrators there and be like.

00:49:17

Yes you did.

00:49:24

Help me identify this or you know is it safe to eat.

00:49:28

Ooh.

00:49:28

I like that.

00:49:28

So you kind of have someone on standby that can answer some questions and be like as you know what is this I'm learning and you know once.

00:49:36

So it's a little.

00:49:36

Bit further along where we can start meeting in person, they'll have their events and stuff again.

00:49:41

Well, we mentioned on a previous episode there there are a couple apps where you can take a picture and it can try to do visual recognition and try to match it up with a mushroom and you can see if it's poisonous or not.

00:49:52

OK.

00:49:52

Also there are some common rules as to how to distinguish poisonous from nonpoisonous.

00:49:58

I can't remember exactly what those rules are.

00:50:01

But I want to have an episode where we talk about the dead cat Mushroom, the most poisonous mushroom, and we can go over like what the characteristics are of edible versus poisonous poisonous mushrooms.

00:50:05
